How to Visit Therme Bucuresti

Where can you find tropical palm trees, soaring temperatures and thermal pools near Romania’s capital? The Therme Bucharest is just the place! Three of us visited recently and had the most relaxing time – after we had a go on the flumes of course… In this post, we provide our top tips on how to visit Therme Bucuresti and how to make the most of your trip.

What is Therme Bucuresti?

Let’s start with the basics, Therme Bucuresti is essentially a large water complex in Romania. It is split into three different sections – Galaxy, the Palm, and Elysium

Galaxy is where the serious fun happens at Therme Bucharest. In this sector, there are amazing water slides and flumes everywhere! We spent at over an hour in here trying out each slide at least once. Don’t miss this on your visit to Therme Bucuresti!

The Palm is home to a large pool, several steam rooms and some restaurants. There is also an outdoor area for sunbathing in the warmer months. There are also optional peeling and mud mask sessions.

Elysium is where some real relaxation takes place. Here you will find multiple different types of saunas, a Thai restaurant and a cocktail bar in the centre of a pool.

Where is Therme Bucuresti?

This is definitely an important factor when considering how to visit the Therme Bucuresti. Given the name, you may have guessed that it is located near Bucharest, Romania’s capital city. It is actually very close to Otopeni Airport to the north of the city.

This makes it a great place to visit to recharge after a busy time in the city or to unwind before a flight. When we have a late flight from Otopeni airport we always visit the Therme Bucuresti. It is even an option if you have a long lay over in Otopeni. A visit to Therme Bucharest will certainly pass the time!

How to get to Therme Bucuresti

Located only 25km north of Bucharest, there are a few options for getting to Therme Bucharest .

There is a free bus, run by Therme Bucharest, that departs from Piata Romana every 2 hours. You can identify it easily as it will say “Therme” in the windscreen.

You can also catch local bus R442 to Therme Bucharest. A day pass for the bus system costs €1.50 but this cannot be bought on the buses, only in the machines.

Alternatively, take a taxi (around €15 for Uber) and arrive at Therme Bucharest in about 30 mins depending on traffic – which is notorious in Bucharest.

Opening Times and Admission costs for Therme Bucharest

The Therme Bucharest is open from 10am – 10pm every day. Admission costs are not straightforward as there are so many different combinations to suit all needs. Check the THERME website for a guide, but its a good idea to ask the staff at the centre which ticket will suit you best. A little bit of forward planning will really enhance your visit to Therme Bucuresti.

What’s Included in the Ticket to Therme Bucharest?

This is good information to have when working out how to visit the Therme Bucuresti. Included in the entry price – if you have a full access ticket – are all saunas including rituals, all scrubs and peels and face masks. There are regular “peeling sessions” and specialised sauna rituals held in different areas throughout the day. There are timetables around the complex to keep you right. It is advised to arrive about 15 minutes early to ensure a place as there is no booking system and the sessions are very popular.

We tried the “peeling”. This involved waiting in the steam room for a staff member to begin the session. She came in and explained clearly what would happen, first in Romanian then in English. She handed out salts with essential oils and each person used this scrub to exfoliate the skin. Everyone in the steam room was also provided with a small pot of clay mask to apply to your face.

What Else to Expect at the Therme Bucuresti?

After this, we waited outside the steam room for the clay to dry before it was rinsed off in the showers. It was a great idea to spent around 20 minutes relaxing on one of the hydro massage beds. We honestly could have stayed there all day. However, there were many other things to do.

Later, we also enjoyed a Himalayan sauna. We entered a room with walls made entirely of pink Himalayan salt. After a few minutes another staff member came into the sauna and explained the purpose and benefits of the salt. She then released eucalyptus into the air which really added to the experience.

We sat for at least 15 minutes enjoying the clear airways, relaxing music and calmed mind.

What is Extra at the Therme Bucharest?

Of course there are plenty of extras that you can add to your trip to Therme Bucharest. Things like massages, facials, etc can be booked in advance and are separate to the entry ticket. There are also bars and restaurants which again are not included in the price. The hydro massage beds are also charged in blocks of 15 mins – totally worth it!

We tried the Thai restaurant and it turned out to be pretty nice food and reasonably priced, considering the surroundings. One aspect of it was rather odd, however. As we were still within the pool area, we were basically dining in a bathing suit. Fortunately, each restaurant will also provide guests with a robe. Still quite an odd experience sitting in the middle of a restaurant in a dressing gown!

Towel hire is extra and if you forget your flip flops, you will need to buy a pair. Of course, I forgot mine. Fortunately, they only charged me €4.

Any extras are added to the watch-like band provided at the cash desk (this handy device also secures your locker). The extra purchases are tallied up and paid when you leave. Our visit to Therme Bucharest was really well organised and stress free. We also felt it was pretty good value.
