Record the Stunning Wild Horses

Did you know that Bosnia Herzegovina is home to hundreds of wild horses? Well, technically they’re feral as they are genetically the same as the domestic horse. However, this herd came about after many of the horses that were used for agricultural work were abandoned in the 1950s, as farm machinery became more widespread. Since then, they have survived harsh winters, war and poaching and their numbers continue to increase.

The horses are very photogenic and provide one of the best Instagram spots in Bosnia. There are tour companies that will take you to the herd.

Bosnia Herzegovina is much more accessible than you might think. And, it is absolutely full of natural beauty and history. Travel around the country is easy and very cheap, however, public transport is not exactly efficient. But that’s all part of the fun!

If you decide to go well off the beaten path, it might be wise to take a guide. There are, unfortunately, still thought to be many unexploded landmines as a result of the Bosnian wars. But don’t let this put you off, be sensible and informed and it might be the best trip you’ve ever had.

When travelling into the wilderness, keep things beautiful. “Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos and kill nothing but time.”

Also, we’d love it if you could show our featured Instagrammers some love. These accounts have some really beautiful feeds of the Balkans and more!

Final note: Things change in the Balkans all the time and there is not much information online in English. As a result, we would definitely advise checking with a local where possible. We found people to be really friendly and super helpful.
